“Impressive directorial debut…”
Review from TheatreWhippet

Longtime DSTC actor Matt Swan took to the director’s chair for the first time with this mesmerising production of ‘Richard II’ at Shakespeare House. The set was a bewitching garden that immediately drew audiences into the story of a doomed monarch and a pivotal chapter in British history.

The cast effortlessly brought life to what can be a difficult play with James Dean demonstrating a humanity and sympathetic nature to Richard that is all too often absent from portrayals of the trapped king. Richard Davy was a noble, honour-bound Bolingbroke and Jenny Earl brought heart and gravitas to her moving turn as John of Gaunt. Alongside such established talents this production also showcased some excellent work by newcomers to the company, Brogan Piggott proving a great success as a complex, charismatic Aumerle and Craig Campbell solid and compelling as both Mowbray and Northumberland.
